The U.S. Social Security Administration (SSA) took a 5% sampling of Social Security card applications with dates of birth from January 1900 through December 1909. Listed below are the most common male names for 1900-1909.
There are many more changes to the girl names than that of the men. Of the top 10 baby girl names from a century ago, only Elizabeth is remains in the top 10. There are also quite a few names in this list which are not in common use today. These names include Myrtle, Lena, and Stella.
The total number of males in the sample is 477,834 and the total number of females is 478,865. Criteria to be included in the sample is simply that a Social Security card application was filed, that the year of birth was between 1900 and 1909, and that the birth was on US soil.
The Social Security Administration produces the most popular baby names list based on all applications for babies born the previous year. Check out other YeahBaby.com lists of top baby names.
